The consumption of organic products in Portugal has been growing in recent years, according to Associação Portuguesa de Empresas de Distribuição - the Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies.
The association reported on a recent study by Portuguese market research group Marktest, which revealed that 47.7% of Portuguese consumers now take organic products into account when doing their shopping.
Trends
According to the research, half of those surveyed seek to purchase free-range meat, and 47.2% would opt for organic fruits and vegetables.
Additionally, 57.7% of consumers who buy organic products are female, citing the concern of maintaining a healthy lifestyle as a top priority.
This is a trend that can be seen throughout Europe. Last month it was reported that organic fruit and vegetable sales were up 28% in Italy year-on-year.
