Alnatura Adds 'Traditional' Varieties Of Vegetables To Its Range

German bio-supermarket group Alnatura has added five 'traditional' vegetable varieties to its range. In an promotion that will run until the end of the 2016 growing season, a number of rare varieties of vegetables, featuring different tastes, looks and shapes, are now locally and seasonally produced for Alnatura.

In partnership with the ProSpecieRara foundation, a charity that campaigns for biological diversity, Alnatura has 'rebooted' an aubergine to be violet with white stripes, a blue potato, a round courgette, a purple-skinned turnip, and an orange tomato.

"We inform the customer about these rare varieties at our vegetable counters, and the interest is huge," said Bernhard Sauer, Alnatura sales manager. "With continued demand, the current range will be expanded in the future. Simply put, if you want to keep these old varieties, you should buy and eat them."

Alnatura is Germany's most popular supermarket for organic and biological produce. The company has branches in 49 cities across 11 provinces, and it also trades online. Alnatura currently employs 2,560 people, including 170 trainees.
