Austrian retailer Billa has said that food waste and unequal distribution of food are grave problems that need to be solved.
The retailer made the statement in the context of a health discussion, conducted at the European Forum Alpbach (EFA) in Austria.
“Every member of the value chain, including manufacturers, retailers and consumers, have to do their best to reduce food waste,” Billa spokesman Volker Hornsteiner explained.
More than 880 Billa stores currently collaborate with organizations that deal with food waste, distributing surpluses to those most in need. Overall, the retailer collaborates with more than 130 facilities, including food banks, Caritas and Red Cross.
Across the world, there is over 1.3 billion tones of food waste generated every year.
