Italian tomato producer Consorzio Casalasco del Pomodoro has announced that it completed its acquisition of the De Rica tomato brand from Generale Conserve.
The company says that De Rica has a 'great reputation and distribution coverage' in Italy and in various foreign markets, and the new deal ensures that tomato production will remain in Italy.
Ansa reports that Italian farmers' association Coldiretti has expressed its support for the deal, which will now see over 555,000 tonnes of Italian produce exported to over 60 countries each year.
Tomato Exports
Coldiretti added that tomato is one of the most purchased products in Italy, and is also one of its most valuable exports, providing revenue of €1.5 billion in 2016.
In July, a report by Ismea and Nielsen named Italy as the world's biggest exporter of both peeled and pulp tomatoes, accounting for a 77% global market share.
