Portuguese retailer Continente has received MSC and ASC certification for its seafood offering across its hypermarket portfolio.
In its 41 hypermarkets, the retailer offers fresh and frozen fish in bulk. Thos certification guarantees that all products it offers are traceable and come from a sustainable fishery or responsible aquaculture farm.
This certification process not only covers Continente's hypermarket, but also the retailer's three seafood logistics, as well as the training of the more than 1,000 employees operating within its fresh and logistics sectors.
More than 20 Continente private label references will also be certified with the MSC blue label across the group's store estate.
“More and more customers want to be informed about what they eat, namely the origin of the products," commented Carla Santos, director of the seafood unit at Sonae MC. "In the case of fish, this has been our concern for several years, regardless of consumer requirements.
"In 2010, Sonae MC was the first food retail group in Portugal to adopt a sustainable seafood policy, taking a leadership position among the entire retail market regarding this concern. We have established principles for the protection of fish species and stocks along its value chain and we are committed to continuing to do so. ”
