Retailer Coop Switzerland has launched a new range of 100% organic, handmade vegan cheese, produced by a Thun-based Swiss start-up called New Roots.
The cheese, made of cashew milk, is available in three different varieties in selected Coop outlets.
These include Camembert cheese, cream cheese, and 'free the goat' cheese, which is an alternative to ricotta.
Plant-Based Alternatives
The fresh-products manager at Coop, Silvio Baselgia, said, “Plant-based foods appeal to consumers because of their durability and, increasingly, because of their taste qualities. Nowadays, they are more popular than ever.
“New vegan alternatives can easily compete with traditional products in terms of appearance, consistency, pleasure and variety,” added Baselgia.
After the successful launch of its vegan minced 'meat' and Naturli burgers, Coop is aiming to expand its range of plant-based foods by adding more items to its product assortment.
New Roots belongs to Freddy Hunziker and his partner, Alice Fauconnet, who started producing the cashew-milk based cheese in 2016.
They are considered the pioneers of vegan cheese in Switzerland and have won several Swiss Vegan Awards and Peta Vegan Food Awards for their New Roots products.
