The biggest drought in over a decade in Hungary is expected to take a heavy toll on the apple harvest and particularly small and medium sized farmers with inadequate irrigation facilities are expected to be hard hit.
According to preliminary estimates Hungarian fruit and vegetable growers will see a 30 per cent loss in profits.
One of the Apple farmers, Imre Rácz told origo.hu that growers in the Szabolcs region of the country will harvest 500,000 –550,000 tonnes of apples, while last year the harvest totalled to 850,000 tonnes.
Fruit and vegetable yields are lower all over Hungary, and the quality of the products is worse.
While some farmers will see at least part of their investments back, others have had to write off this years’ harvest altogether.
