Dutch supermarket chain Jumbo has ceased the sale of live lobsters at its stores, following protests by animal rights activists.
According to trade publication Distrifood, protests organised by Partij voor de Dieren, an animal rights body, at the group’s new Jumbo Foodmarkt store, in Leidsche Rijn, led the company to make the move.
The retailer announced that it would cease the sale of lobsters at the store immediately, and it plans to roll this measure out to other Foodmarkt branches – in Amsterdam, Breda and Veghel – by the end of the year.
‘Liegebeest’ Award
Recently, Jumbo was nominated by activist group Wakker Dier for the ‘Liegebeest’ award, presented to firms that have inhumane animal practices in their supply chains, according to the group.
Jumbo was nominated for the award for its practice of ‘stunning’ lobsters by placing them in freezers prior to cooking, however, due to its change in practices, Wakker Dier says that it is no longer considering Jumbo for this award.
