Dairy giant FrieslandCampina has announced that it has switched to a new, sustainable energy supply that runs on green electricity, at its facility in Veghel, in the Netherlands.
The new set up will cut the CO2 emission of the location by up to 20%.
'Lead With Sustainability'
Energy Officer at FrieslandCampina Veghel, Ad Snoeijen, said, “We annually process 1.5 billion kilograms of milk, and 1 billion kilograms of whey here. The processing, evaporating and drying of this amount of milk and whey demand a lot of energy.
"With this new energy supply, we are taking a major step towards making our chain more sustainable. This is one of the strategic objectives of FrieslandCampina: lead with sustainability.”
Previously, the facility in Veghel relied on electricity and steam generated by gas turbines – a method that was popular and reliable in the past.
However, a host of factors like high nitrogen emissions and steep maintenance costs have led the dairy giant to consider new, sustainable options.
