German retailer Edeka has created a temporary labelling solution to support free-range producers who have been affected by the legal requirement to keep poultry indoors this winter.
The lockdown on poultry was introduced earlier this winter in many parts of Germany, following an outbreak of bird flu in the country.
As a result of the governmental order, many producers of free-range eggs have lost their classification, due to keeping their laying hens indoors for longer than the maximum period of 12 weeks.
The declassification has led to a drop in sales and a subsequent loss of income for many of the free-range producers.
By explaining the reason for the temporary indoor housing of the free-range hens, the new Edeka label aims to clarify the difference between these operations and year-round indoor egg-producing operations, offering the customer a more informed choice.
