Genoa's Cristoforo Colombo airport in Italy has lifted the 100ml liquid limit for hand luggage, but only for pesto products.
The airport launched the 'Il pesto è buono' (Pesto is good) scheme on 1 June, allowing passengers to carry jars of pesto onto flights, as long as they make a donation to Flying Angels - a charity which flies sick children abroad for treatment.
This month over 500 jars of pesto have successfully been brought onto flights, which has raised over €500 for the charity.
Pesto Project
The airport said that the idea was born after hundreds of pesto jars were seized by Airport security. The region of Liguria, near Genoa, is particularly well-known for its pine nut and basil pesto sauce.
Passengers are now able to take up to 500g of pesto onboard when they get a special sticker in exchange for a €0.50 donation. The sauce is scanned in a special x-ray machine and can then be put into hand luggage.
