Italian producers haven commenced production of aronia berries, also know as 'chokeberries', which have been hailed as a 'superfood', according to Italian news agency ANSA.
This particular variety of berries is produced by Masseria Fruttirossi, a producer located in Castellaneta, in the Puglia region which has devoted four hectatres to more than 9,000 aronia plants.
Since the start of the month, the berries have started to go on sale in the supermarkets of Northern Italy, with the company also seeking to develop a packaged juice product.
Expectation
“Our aim is to develop an innovative agricultural sector in Puglia, with a particular focus on the healthy properties of fruits, including pomegranate, aronia and goji berries," a spokesperson for the company said.
Distribution will be undertaken by B&B Frutta di Verona, which has signed an agreement with Masseria Fruttirossi for exclusive commercialisation of the product.
