Spanish retailer Mercadona has announced the arrival of the Verna variety of lemon to its stores.
The lemons are sourced, like the popular Primofiori variety, from the Murcia, Valencia and Andalusia regions.
The Verna lemon is a larger variety, with a rougher skin, and is noted for having a “good amount of juice”, as well as a fresh aroma and flavour, the retailer said.
The lemons will be sold until the beginning of June at Mercadona stores in Spain and Portugal,
"If these difficult times give us lemons, let's make lemonade," Mercadona said in a statement.
According to the statement, demand for these lemons, of which approximately 25 million kilograms were sold in 2019, remained consistent during the COVID-19 lockdown period, due to their excellent properties.
