Mercadona Commences Local Potato Campaign In Spain

Spanish retailer Mercadona has announced the launch of a campaign that will see it stock local potatoes in all of its supermarkets.

The retailer expects to buy more than 136,000 tonnes of Spanish potatoes in 2017, representing an increase of 10% on the previous season.

The vegetables will be sourced from Castilla y León, Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia, the Basque region, and the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Local Produce

Mercadona says that 80% of the total number of potatoes that it sells are of Spanish origin. The retailer only imports potatoes from other countries during the months in which Spanish production is insufficient.

As part of the company's sustainability efforts, it collaborates with 12,400 farmers and 12,000 fishermen across Spain. The retailer says that it prioritises, where feasible, raw materials and products of national origin.

The company was recently voted the retail/distribution company with the best reputation in Spain.
