Spain's pig-feeding season 2015/2016 has been deemed a huge success by those in the Ibérico ham industry.
With over 600,000 Ibérico pigs feeding in cork and evergreen oak filled pastures (where they find plenty of the acorns that play a key role in their diet), the season saw between 20 to 30 per cent more animals fed than the previous year.
Efeagro.com quotes Elena Diéguez, from the Asociación Española de Criadores del Cerdo Ibérico (Aeceriber), who said that it has been a great season, with a mild winter and an acorn and pasture production that was "overall, pretty high".
She added that this means that the quality of Ibérico ham to be produced later this year is expected to be "excellent".
She highlighted that the rain the region has received this spring paints an optimistic picture for the season to come too, although she warns that it will be necessary to wait until the summer to confirm the level of acorns available.
She concluded by saying that this season is definitely the best that the Ibérico ham sector has had in the last few years.
