M&S Trials Plastic Packaging-Free Fruit And Vegetables

UK retailer Marks & Spencer has launched more than 90 lines of fresh fruit and vegetables that are free from plastic packaging, in its store in Tolworth.

The initiative, which is in the trial phase, will also witness the deployment of trained greengrocers to help customers pick and weigh their products.

They will also offer advice on how to preserve fresh produce and prevent food waste at home, the company said.

For the trial phase, the retailer has also removed 'best before' date labels from fresh fruit and vegetables.

'Market-Leading Initiatives'

Head of food sustainability at Marks & Spencer, Louise Nicholls, said, “We’re proud to launch a series of market-leading initiatives to help our customers take home less plastic.

"We know our customers want to play their part in cutting out plastic, while as a business our goal is to become zero-waste by 2025."

Apart from the initiatives at Tolworth, the retailer has committed to launching additional lines of loose produce and more sustainable alternatives to plastic in every UK store.

It also aims to replace plastic produce bags with paper alternatives, and phase out plastic barcode stickers in favour of eco-friendly options.
