Discounter Lidl has said it is keeping an attentive eye on developments in the Netherlands after the country's export ban on eggs was extended until Sunday.
ESM reported on Wednesday that rival group Aldi South expects an egg shortage due to a three-day ban on all poultry exports from the Netherlands, due to an outbreak of bird flue.
Now Lidl has followed suit by revealing that its own egg supply is getting tight as a result of the export ban being extend by two more days, after bird flu was found on a second Dutch farm.
"Lidl is observing the situation in the Netherlands very attentively," reports Reuters a Lidl spokesperson stating. "Currently the delivery situation to Lidl Germany is tight."
In the region of 700 Dutch poultry farms house 98 million chickens and export six billion eggs a year, with much going to neighbouring Germany.
