German discounter Netto Marken-Discount has announced that it will replace the plastic wrapping on its organic cucumbers with so-called ‘natural branding’.
Using the system, organic labelling is applied by laser to the surface of the cucumber, reducing the need for individual-item packaging.
Natural Branding
Since 2018, the discounter has sold organic ginger with a similar natural product label, in a move that has saved it 43 tonnes of plastic every year.
In addition to the new measure, organic cucumbers that are not yet available with natural branding will, in the meantime, be marked with an adhesive label.
Netto Marken-Discount has already taken several other measures to make its packaging more sustainable. It recently introduced the FSC Mix Karton for apples, as well as FlatSkin packaging for its self-service meat counters.
Further improvements in all product areas are planned for the years 2019 and 2020, the retailer added.
