A new onion variety, the Asda Sweet Red, will not cause eyes to water when chopping or bad breath after eating, claim the growers.
The onion, which is sweeter than its predecessors, has taken farmers in Bedfordshire 20 years to cultivate, The Telegraph reports. The irritant in onions, sulphur, has been decreased in this variety, and thus the scent is less likely to irritate the chopper's eyes.
Although less flavoursome, the reduction in sulphur will give the onion less pungency and won't leave a lingering smell on the breath, claims Asda, which will stock the Sweet Red this week.
Red onions became available in the UK in the early nineties, and now account for 20 per cent of onion sales.
