Parmesan cheese exports to Germany are decreasing, however, sales are rising internationally, according to reports.
That’s according to the Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano Reggiano, the association of Parmesan producers.
Overall Sales
In 2018, sales of Parmesan increased by 8.3% in Germany, compared to 2017, trade platform Rundschau.de reported. Exports grew by 5.5%.
However, in the same year, exports to Germany fell by 4.4%, according to Nicola Bertinelli, the president of the Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano Reggiano.
Third-Largest Market
Germany is the third most important export market for Parmesan cheese, behind France and the United States.
In 2019, production of about 3.75 million cheese wheels is expected, compared to 3.7 million in 2018.
Moreover, worldwide investment of more than €24 million has been earmarked by Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano Reggiano for communication and marketing.
