The demand for Peruvian chillis and peppers is growing. According to the Peruvian Association of Exporters (ADEX), exports of capsicum are expected to reach €250 million (approximately $286 million) this year.
Eduardo Amorrotu, President of ADEX, said that Peruvian chillis and peppers are highly appreciated in international markets, adding that in 2011-2015, exports grew by 14 per cent in value and 62 per cent in volume.
Spain is the main consumer of Peruvian chillis and peppers inside the EU, while Mexico and the United States are the biggest buyers globally.
Capsicum preserve is the main product, representing nearly 48 per cent of total exports. Dry capsicum comes second, with approximately 42 per cent of exports, and last comes fresh capsicum with 10 per cent. However, growth is expected in this last category.
Peru's positioning in the sector has helped the country be selected as the host of the 23rd International Pepper Conference, which will be held at the Costa de Sol Hotel in Trujillo, Peru, from June 15 to 17.
The event will gather innovators, scientists, exporters, producers and all professionals involved with capsicum.
