Romania's Telemea de Sibiu or the Sibiu cheese has been included in the list of protected designations of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indications (PGI) products in the European Union, according to a report in the Romania Insider.
It is a semi-hard cheese produced from fresh, unpasteurised raw sheep milk through the process of enzymatic coagulation.
The milk used for making the Telemea de Sibiu is sourced from livestock raised in the Sibiu area that feed mainly on pasture.
Cheese producers, comprising ten legal entities located in the region, demanded a PGI status for the product to protect the traditional recipe, the report said.
It is the seventh Romanian product to be listed as a protected geographical indications (PGI) product.
