A Eurostat study has revealed that Spain was the largest producer of fruit in terms of area in the European Union in 2015. Italy and Poland occupied second and third positions, according to the statistical office.
Apples and tomatoes were the fruits that saw the highest level of production last year.
Some 636,000 hectares were allocated to fruit production in Spain, while Italy allocated 420,000 hectares (20.2%).
Around the two thirds of the tomatoes that were produced in the EU were supplied by Italy and Spain.
