Spain accounted for 37.6 per cent of the total global volume of exported lettuce in 2015, making it the by far the world's largest market for the vegetable.
According to hortoinfo.es, the global export total for lettuce was 2,116.67 million kilos, 796.2 million of which came from Spain. It exported more than twice the volume of second-place United States, which produced 341.04 million kilos. Mexico was third with 156.04 million.
The total value of lettuce exports in 2015 reached €2,149.54 million. Out of that, Spain earned €693.8 million, the United States made €483.91 million and Italy collected €195.41 million.
According to the United Nations Statistics Division and Comtrade, which compiled the figures, Italy, Netherlands, China, Belgium, France, Germany and Jordan round out the top 10 exporters, volume-wise.
The main export market forSpanish lettuce is Germany, followed by France, the UK, the Netherlands and Italy.
