Spanish almond production is expected to experience a drop of 11 per cent in the 2016/2017 season, compared to the last year. As reported by europapress.es, despite this decrease, production will remain above the last five years' average by 6 per cent.
The National Board of Dried Fruits, an association comprised of several Spanish agricultural organisations such as ASAJA, COAG, UPA and AEOFRUSE, predicts an estimate production of 46,628 tonnes of almonds for the current period.
According to industry spokespersons, the decrease in production has happened as a consequence of atypical weather conditions during the flouring period: high temperatures until February and lack of rain and frost right after, with the new fruit barely beginning to develop.
Besides that, the sector has experienced a particularly irregular production in areas affected by drought since 2014.
