The Spanish interprofessional association of lime and grapefruit, Ailimpo, estimates an increase of 22% in production for the 2016/2017 season.
As reported by FreshPlaza.es that represents approximately 802,680 tonnes of harvested limes.
These figures point towards a stabilisation of the volumes, due in part, to the progressive introduction of new varieties.
Unfavourable weather conditions – an almost non-existent winter and a very long spring – prevented the harvest from reaching its potential, approximately 1.2 million tonnes.
This increase in production strengthens Spain's position as Europe's leader in the lime market, of which the country controls 80%.
