Spar Austria has announced that it will use laser labelling in place of paper stickers for organic mangoes.
The move will enable the retailer to save several tonnes' worth of paper, and help in implementing sustainable packaging for its Spar Natur range of organic fruit and vegetables.
Chief executive, Dr Gerhard Drexel, added, "Thanks to the laser logo on mangoes, we can guarantee the legally-binding separation of organic and conventional fruits even without stickers.
"This saves thousands of stickers and films every day that were previously required for the prescribed separation."
Spar has partnered with Frutura in Styria on the implementation of the laser-labelling system.
The mangoes with the new labelling will be available in all Eurospar and Interspar stores in Austria.
