Spar has announced that it has invested €5.5 million in a new fruit and vegetables distribution centre in the Canary Islands.
The distribution centre, located in Mercalaspalmas, will boost Spar Gran Canaria’s supply and distribution capacity by around 36%.
The new facility will enhance the quality of products and optimise processes that will improve the standard of fresh produce supply to Spar stores, the retailer said.
A Modern Facility
It has two different docks for local fresh produce and internationally-sourced goods.
The refrigerated storage area spreads across 3,400 square metres, and is equipped with a state-of-the-art warehouse management system with voice picking technology.
The facility also includes six docks for delivery trucks, an office space, and changing rooms for employees.
Focus On Local Produce
It is designed to store more than 630,000 kilograms of fruit and vegetables, of which a large percentage is sourced from local suppliers.
Almost 200 local farmers in the Canary Islands sell their produce to Spar.
This number has increased by more than 40% in the last five years, the retailer added.
