Tesco has launched a range of diced frozen fruit and vegetables, which are time-consuming or messy to prepare when fresh, such as pomegranate, beetroot, watermelon and coconut.
The launch follows the retailer’s successful introduction of frozen, peeled and halved avocado pears, in 2015 .
The new range covers foods that have become increasingly popular as ingredients in dishes, drinks and desserts; from salads to tagines and Asian dishes, and from smoothies to brownies and cakes.
Marianne Aitken, frozen-food buyer for Tesco, explained, "Frozen fruit options are becoming increasingly popular with shoppers, who are looking for simple ways to eat a wide range of fruits, without the preparation time or hassle associated with fresh varieties."
The demand for Tesco’s frozen slices of fruit increased by 35% in the last year; the sales of frozen smoothies, which now include a mixed fruit-and-veg flavour, almost doubled over the same period.
Apart from saving time, the diced & frozen format could help consumers to reduce food waste bymaking it easy for them to store what's left in re-sealable freezer packs.
