Spanish fruit and vegetable wholesaler Unica Group has moved 253 million kilos of produce so far this year and, with the summer months still to come, is expected to far exceed last year's output.
As reported on freshplaza.es, last year's output reached 222 million kilos and the company estimated that number would reach 250 million kilos in 2016. The company's fiscal year ends on 30 September.
Growth was seen in almost all SKUs, including peppers (+22 per cent) watermelons (+18 per cent) and aubergines (+53 per cent).
Some 90 per cent of Unica Group's production is commercialised abroad, a trend that increases every year. Germany is the main destination with nearly 30 per cent of exports, followed by Poland, France, UK, Scandinavian countries and Netherlands. Poland is the fastest growing destination and the group's exports to this country increased five-fold.
Grupo Unica is formed by the Spanish Co-ops Cabasc, Casur, Cohorsan, Cota 120, El Grupo, Ferva, Parque Natural, Agrolevante y Parafruts, and most recently, Camposol.
