Lidl Belgium has announced that it will only offer Fairtrade-certified bananas in its stores.
The move will enable the retailer to ensure that around 14,000 tonnes of bananas are sustainably sourced every year.
'Honest Bananas'
Nicolas Lambert, director of Fairtrade Belgium, said, "Thanks to Lidl's commitment, honest bananas are increasingly becoming a habit for Belgian consumers.
"This is first and foremost excellent news for producers, who are assured with Fairtrade of a higher price and better working conditions."
In February, the retailer had announced plans to sell only Fairtrade-certified bananas from the middle of this year.
Turnover In Sustainable Products
Lidl Belgium has also set itself the goal of increasing turnover across its sustainable product range by 10% annually.
The discounter has been a loyal Fairtrade partner for years, and switched to certified cocoa for its private label chocolate bars in 2018.
