Intermarché Portugal To Stop Selling Eggs From Caged Chickens

Intermarché Portugal has announced it is to cease the sale of eggs from hens reared in cages.

The procedure gives a deadline of 2025 for producers to adapt to the hypermarket chain's new requirements. Intermarché is part of France’s Les Mousquetaires Group.

Intermarché is the latest Portuguese retailer (after Lidl and Jerónimo Martins) that has announced that it will end the sale of eggs from caged chickens.

New Approach

According to a press statement, from 2025, Intermarché will only sell eggs from alternative breeding methods (categories 0, 1 and 2), i.e. private label products, 1st price and national brands, responding to 'increased demand from consumers that are increasingly attentive to the conditions of animal creation and welfare'.

In addition, Intermarché Portugal said it is reviewing the duration of its contractual commitments with different packing centres, to give greater visibility, in the medium and long term, to all levels of the production chain.
