Italian Earthquakes Lead To 20% Decline In Milk Production

Recent earthquake activity in Italy has led to a decrease of 20% in milk production, according to reports by Italian farmers' association Coldiretti.

The organisation said that there are almost 25,000 farms operating in the earthquake-prone regions of Lazio, Umbria, Marche and Abruzzo, and that tremors have stressed the animals, leading to lower production volumes.

The effects of the earthquake on crops and livestock have further added to the problems caused by periods of heatwave and drought in Italy this summer.

Coldiretti's president Roberto Moncalvo said that agricultural farmland affected by the earthquake will need to be "firmly supported", underlining the need for reconstruction to help the local economy recover in these areas.
