Italy’s Selex Gruppo Commerciale (SGC) recently opened the first store featuring its new Famila Superstore format in Mestre, on the Venice mainland.
The store, which is managed by Gruppo Unicom, a member of SGC, features a sales area of 2,500 square metres and offers more than 17,000 references. It also features multiple solutions implemented in order to promote energy savings.
The new format will be extended to other stores that are being reconstructed, and to new openings planned for the next two years, in which €135 million will be invested.
Famila Banners
SGC owns and operates 221 stores of the Famila (supermarket), Famila Superstore and IperFamilia (hypermarkets) banners across Italy. The Famila banner has been present in Italy since 1984, when its use was granted to SGC by Famila Center in Heidelberg, Germany.
The Famila banner achieved a 1.5% same-network growth in the first part of the year, in contrast to the performance of the market as a whole which has been negative. Turnover in 2017 amounted to more than €2 billion.
SGC is the third-biggest modern distribution and retail company in Italy, consisting of 14 associated companies and 2,542 outlets, with a market share of 11.7%. Last year, turnover increased 4.1% year on year to €10.7 billion, and a further growth of 4.2% is expected in 2018 (to €11.2 billion).
The retailer recently introduced the pick-up service at two physical stores for shopping made online on the Cosicomodo.it portal, to be followed by others.
SGC is part of the ESD Italia purchasing center, a partner of European leader EMD.
