Jumbo To Mainly Open Foodmarkt-Style Stores In Belgium: Reports

Dutch retailer Jumbo is going to focus on opening Foodmarkt-style outlets in Belgium, according to local trade publication Gondola.

According to Jumbo CEO Frits Van Eerd, the retailer will be seeking to make a "good start" in the country through the opening of three to five outlets by the end of 2019.

Jumbo already operates five Foodmarkt outlets in the Netherlands, following the recent opening of its latest outlet in Groningen.

Gondola also reported Van Eerd as saying that if the company's initial entry into Belgium does not go smoothly, the retailer will consider withdrawal from the market.

Should things go well with the group's initial foray into the country, however, Jumbo is planning to focus first on company-owned outlets, before considering franchise stores.

The company set up a Belgium-based holding company in March of this year, and appointed Peter Isaac as the managing director of Jumbo Belgium in June.
