Macedonian discount grocer Kam Market will expand its activities to neighbouring Bulgaria, where it plans to open 20 to 25 stores by the end of the year.
According to Regal.bg, the first ten to 12 supermarkets will be opened by June in capital city, Sofia. The mid-term plan is to have 40 stores by the end of 2017 and a total of 60 by the end of 2018.
Kam's long-term intention is to open one Kam Market per 15,000 to 20,000 inhabitants in Bulgaria, which means that Sofia could have up to 30 stores.
The chain will occupy the vacant niche in the discount segment, after the closure of Penny Market, and target market leader Kaufland.
Based in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kam is owned by the Kamchev family and has 63 stores in 17 cities.
It is the only discounter in the country, with a 4 per cent share of the entire retail market, 6 per cent of food retail sector.
