Spanish retailer Mercadona plans to invest €180 million in its new 'efficient' store model in the new year, which will enhance and optimise customers' shopping experience, the company announced Thursday.
It will revamp and refurbish 125 stores throughout Spain in 2017, starting with two stores in Valencia (Puerto de Sagunto) and Granada (municipality of Peligros).
The renovations will revitalise the store environment, improving the decor, distribution and arrangement of different store sections. The update will include 65 suppliers, and follow a new interior and exterior colour and design scheme.
It will favour open spaces with natural lighting, warm colours, and eco-efficient solutions.
Enhancements in insulation, such as thickening walls and ceilings, new freezer cabinets, and a modern automated LED lighting system will contribute to a cut in energy consumption of 40%, the company said.
Other improvements include specific shelves for fresh milk and cold juices, a central gondola for selected cosmetics, and a new fish display, among others.
To facilitate easier shopping, the company has widened fruit and vegetable aisles and introduced a new shopping cart model, as well as two lighter and more ergonomic basket models.
Mercadona has also spent €45 million on IT developments, including a €1 million revamp of its corporate website to make it more user and mobile-friendly.
