German retailer Metro has opened its first zero-energy store, in St Pölten, Austria, in partnership with Modern-Expo Group.
Metro’s St Pölten wholesale outlet is fully committed to the idea of sustainability, and it is already regarded as an international showcase project.
It is the first zero-energy store to be constructed with an area of 8,500 square metres.
In terms of its design, the company decided to move away from its pragmatic blue-yellow industrial building, towards more wood and daylight, with a modern layout.
According to Arno Wohlfahrter, Metro Austria’s CEO, the realisation of the zero-energy status of this store represents another innovative and sustainable step towards the future.
Store Development
Modern-Expo was chosen as a partner to work on the new Metro retail concept in St Pölten.
As well as standard shelving, checkouts, high racks and stainless-steel equipment, the company developed chipboard advertising panels and inserts, information points, and special solutions for the store’s fruit-and-vegetable department and bakery section.
Thousands of customers have already visited the new Metro store. The successful opening marks another milestone of company’s profitable and sustainable growth.
