Morrisons has announced that it will be upgrading to contactless payment technology in all its UK outlets, to be completed by summer 2015.
Payments of up to £20 can be made by tapping a bank card against a reader, which saves an average of ten seconds per card transaction. It has been proven to reduce customer queues during peak times.
More than £4 million has been spent on the investment, upgrading 15,500 payment points in supermarkets and convenience stores.
Contactless payment is becoming more widely used and accepted, and the trend is expected to rise in the coming years. Some 58 million contactless-enabled cards are currently in UK circulation.
Martyn Fletcher, group retail director at Morrisons, said, “From summer 2015, all of our payment points across the country will have been upgraded to accept contactless payments.
"It will make shopping faster and easier for our shoppers. This is another improvement in technology at Morrisons that will improve our customers’ shopping trip.”
The transaction limit is set to rise to £30 later this year, just after Morrisons unveils the new technology.
