Packaging company Ardagh Group has said that its aluminium cans have been used on the International Space Station, packaging meals from French food manufacturer Hénaff.
The gourmet canned-food options that were sent into space, created by French chef Thierry Marx, included beef tongue, poultry with morels, and pressed gingerbread with exotic fruits.
“This is certainly one of our more unusual applications," said Laurent Cordier, food-sales director at Ardagh Group's metal division, "but it really does show how some of the inherent advantages of the aluminium can – its light weight, ease of opening, preservation of taste without preservatives, compactness for storage without refrigeration – are so conducive to catering in space.”
