Packaging company DS Smith has announced the launch of an augmented-reality (AR) app that seeks to modernise packaging instructions for its customers.
The AR app will help customers assemble packaging with animated instructions, thereby replacing traditional print and online-video instructions.
In order to avail of the service, users have to download the DS Smith app and point their smart device at the packaging. The app also provides improved functionality for DS Smith and its clients to consistently manage their suppliers, according to the company.
“This new app could really transform the way we communicate with automotive customers and their suppliers, and enable them to provide active content, which will show, without ambiguity, how to assemble and pack heavy and valuable automotive components,” said Peter Foot, marketing and innovation director of the company's heavy-duty business in the UK.
“This is vital when parts are being shipped all over the world and assembled by teams in multiple locations. It will mean that global customers can have confidence that packaging is being assembled in the correct way and guaranteeing the safe arrival of parts. It is quick and easy, and is an excellent example of using new technology to streamline processes," Foot continued.
AR Potential
Foot said that the evolution from bar codes to QR codes, and now to this AR app, is another way to provide optimal service and packaging solutions to the company's customers.
The technology is still in its nascent stages for the retail and packaging sector, however, last July, Dutch retailer Albert Heijn launched an AR product scanner that allows customers to find out more about its private-label products.
Through the 'AH Product Scanner' app, customers scan a product in store with their phone's camera and receive additional information about ingredients, nutritional values, allergens, recipes and the origin of products.
