Dutch retailer Jumbo is switching to the use of more sustainable bottles for all its fresh juice SKUs.
The retailer made the announcement as it launched a 1 litre bottle of fresh orange juice in environmentally friendly packaging.
The new bottle is comprised of three-quarters recycled plastic and one quarter recyclable, bio-based plastic.
The bottle cap is made from 100% transparent HDPE, which is also recyclable form of plastic.
The measure will save around 100,000 kilos of new plastic every year, the retailer said.
Important Difference
“The switch to these more sustainable bottles makes an important difference here, because our fresh juices are popular with our customers," says Olaf de Boer, commercial director, Jumbo.
“With the 'new' bottles, we retain the same user-friendliness for the customer and the product still tastes just as good, while we ensure that less plastic for one-time use is in circulation. That is pure profit! ” he added.
The company has taken a series of actions to reduce the use of packaging materials and in particular to reduce its plastic footprint.
It revealed that it has committed to reducing 20% of the packaging material it uses by 2025 and to replace 95% of the remaining material with recyclable solutions.
The introduction of sustainable bottles for fresh juices is expected to make an important contribution to achieving the retailer's set targets.
