Dutch retailer Plus is rolling out reusable plates, bowls cups and cutlery in its stores, as the retailer migrates away from single use tableware.
The retailer intends to introduce the new range of reusable plastic tableware in time for next year's barbecue season.
European Legislation
"The European Commission has recently presented plans to reduce plastic pollution and plastic 'soup' in the oceans, which are already at an advanced stage," commented Marius Smit, founder of sustainability initiative Plastic Whale. "This will mean, among other things, that many products, and in the long run disposable plastics generally, will disappear from the market.
"I warmly welcome the fact that Plus has already taken responsibility for this and has decided to stop selling disposable plastics."
Other measures that Plus is taking to reduce its single use plastic footprint include the introduction of paper-based straws, cocktail sticks made from FSC-certified bamboo and beer and wine glasses made from recycled PET.
