Spanish retailer Eroski has introduced reusable mesh bags for fruit and vegetables as an alternative to single-use plastic bags.
The new bags are washable and can be reused at least up to 20 times.
Presently, the mesh bags have been rolled out in a few supermarkets. In future, the retailer aims to incorporate them into its entire commercial network.
The reusable mesh bags are available for purchase in a batch of four units.
They can carry up to five kilograms in weight, and customers can put their bulk purchases of fruit and vegetables in these bags for weighing.
An Additional Improvement
The director of health and sustainability at Eroski, Alejandro Martínez Berriochoa, said that the new initiative is an addition to other improvements introduced by the retailer in the greengrocer’s section.
These include increasing the number of references sold in bulk and replacing plastic in the trays of some fruit and vegetables sold under the EROSKI Natur brand with paper certified by the FSC.
It is also working on a project to replace single-use plastic bags with compostable and renewable materials.
By 2025, the retail giant aims to reduce the use of single-use plastics in its network by at least 20%.
