German discounter Netto Marken-Discount is to introduce reusable 'nets' for loose fruit and vegetable products, as well as loose baked goods, to its stores from May.
The environmentally-friendly solution will replace the traditional disposable plastic bag in-stores, and will be rolled out to all 4,200 outlets in the group's estate.
'Important Step'
"A reusable alternative to the plastic bag for fruit and vegetables and bakery products is another important step towards more sustainability," commented Christina Stylianou of Netto Marken-Discount's corporate communications.
"The reusable nets are only one of many measures that we are pushing, for example, we have already introduced packaging developed from 'grass' paper and natural branding in our fruit and vegetable department."
In addition, the retailer recently announced the rollout of selected meat products in FlatSkin packaging, which saves up to 60% of plastic compared to conventional packaging.
