Food producers in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia will have to adhere to new rules that impose strict provisions for labeling of food products.
From 13 November, it will be obligatory to label the product name, nutritional table, composition, net weight, shelf life, among other items. The minimum font size should be 1.2 mm in order to be visible to consumers so that they can be informed about the product they are purchasing.
The product may contain voluntary information including nutritional claims such as whether the product has certain vitamins or minerals, and can also list health claims.
Food producers exporting their goods had until 13 December 2014 to implement these provisions and now it is the turn of those distributing their products on the domestic market.
According to the director of the Food and Veterinary Agency, Zoran Poposki, if food producers do not adhere to the policy then appropriate measures will be taken. Fines for non-compliance range from €1,000 to €10,000 in local currency.
The new regulations came into force on 3 September and should provide greater protection of public health from the hazards associated with food.
