Packaging and paper group Mondi has launched a new packaging solution for watermelon transportation and storage, which will enhance product appearance at the point of sale.
The new packaging is made from a rectangular cardboard box, with a window showing the product packed inside. Mondi says that the mono-corrugated cardboard design is easy to assemble and stack during transportation, and will allow 50% more watermelons to be shipped in one truck.
It is also designed to be easier for the consumer to carry home, and to help retailers display the product on their shelves. The new concept was initially launched in Turkish supermarkets, but is now available for the global market.
Sustainability And Convenience
Mondi says that 40% of food waste in developing markets occurs at the early stages of the supply chain due to faulty transportation and storage, and hopes that this new packaging will provide a sustainable solution that will also benefit retailers and consumers.
"This is an excellent example of Mondi’s capabilities to address market needs for convenience, differentiation at point of sale and sustainability," said Fatos Adak, product innovation manager at Mondi Corrugated Packaging Turkey.
"We have identified, together with suppliers, customers, research institutes and experts, four areas of focus when designing smarter packaging solutions; reducing damage in transit/storage, extending shelf and product life, adapting packaging design to evolving socio-demographics and achieving packaging traceability for better inventory management."
