Portuguese supermarket chain Pingo Doce has partnered with services provider Environmental Global Facilities (EGF) on a joint recycling campaign.
As part of the 'Reciclar Vale Mais' initiative, consumers will be able to exchange their used packaging for discounts in supermarkets.
EGF will provide a national network of special 'ecopoints' to 15 Pingo Doce stores as part of an initial pilot project, with the facilities located in the car parks of selected establishments.
For two months, used packaging delivered to one of the collection points can be exchanged for credit on shoppers' Poupa Mais cards.
Consumers can deliver bags of 30 or 50 litres, for which they will receive €0.10 or €0.15, respectively.
Service Availability
The platform is available in the stores of Quinta do Conde, Barreiro e Alcochete, Porto de Mós, Batalha, Águeda, Aveiro, Vila Nova de Gaia (Coimbrões), Santa Maria da Feira, Fafe, Vizela, Arcos de Valdevez, Viana do Castelo (Portuzelo), Monção (Gandra) and Vila Nova de Cerveira (Lugar de Faias).
This initiative, part of EGF's national social innovation programme, aims to prepare the population for greater separation of waste, to ensure that national targets are met.
EGF is part of the Mota-Engil/Urbaser Group, operating in the environmental sector, as well as in waste treatment and recovery in Portugal. It processes approximately 3.2 million tonnes of urban waste annually, serving a population of 6.3 million across 174 Portuguese municipalities.
