Packaging company Smurfit Kappa has announced the appointment of Dr María de Lourdes Melgar Palacios to its board as an independent, non-executive director, effective 1 January 2020.
She is an experienced professional and is recognised for her expertise in the field of energy and public policy.
In a career spanning 26 years, she has held several top roles in the public and private sectors as well as academia.
Presently, Lourdes serves as a consultant at DAI and is a research affiliate at the Centre for Collective Intelligence at MIT. She is also a part of the board of Grupo Financiero Santander Mexico.
'Extensive Career'
Commenting on her appointment, Smurfit Kappa Group Chair, Irial Finan, said, "We look forward to broadening the expertise and diversity of the Board with the appointment of Lourdes as an independent non-executive director.
"Lourdes' extensive career in energy, sustainability, and business in Latin America will add valuable insight to the Board."
Lourdes served in the Mexican Government for 16 years in the ministry of foreign affairs and the ministry of energy.
In the private sector, she served as a director on the boards of Petroleos Mexicanos and the Federal Electricity Commission.
