Smurfit Kappa has announced it has won a Red Dot Award for five of its 'packaging solutions' this year. Winning criteria included design, innovation, customer convenience and a sustainable use of resources.
The 'Red Dot' honours innovative product-designs and design concepts and is awarded by the 'Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen' in Essen (Germany).
Out of over 17,000 entries - from 46 countries worldwide - the winning Smurfit Kappa designs, created by teams from Germany, Poland and Spain included a packaging for apples that makes a 'Cardboard Playground' for children, a cardboard carrier for cats that doubles as a hide-out and a 'Strong Grip' handle, which makes heavy water bottles easier to carry.
VP Innovation and Development at Smurfit Kappa, Arco Berkenbosch, said: "We are very proud and honoured to have won five coveted Red Dot Awards and to be recognised in the most prestigious field of design. These awards are testament to our world-class designers, setting a global benchmark for creativity and innovation."
Previous winners of Red Dot Awards include Apple, Samsung and Phillips.
